I stumbled across one of the “Back Women” images on Tumblr this week and I had to know more about the photo and pleasantly discover is was part of a series, titled Black Women I taken by French photographer Valerie Belin. Taken in 2001 these 10 portraits are as serious as they are beautiful. She uses the simplicity and arresting contrast of a black and white filter to create an almost bust or sculptural appearance, which helps to convey the beauty of the their features and skin.

I also fell in love with her portraits of soon to be wed Moroccan women… “in which she highlights the intricate, elaborate and artistic details of the garments and adornments worn by these Moroccan brides, giving them a monarch-like royal appearance.” Unfortunately, there is no information on the culture or the traditions surrounding the women’s garments. (Might have to look into that for another post!)

Her Michael Jackson Jackson and Bodybuilders series are pretty boss too…the link to her website is below.
